Plant Your Flag

Plant Your Flag

WeLoveTheCity believes that the energy transition will proceed more quickly if you give residents and entrepreneurs the space to implement it in their own way. That is the idea behind Plant Your Flag, Nijmegen’s most sustainable neighbourhood. Our company has helped around 300 self-builders and co-builders with small and large budgets to seize their freedom: build your own home or work space that fits in with a sustainable future as you envision it.

The result is a kaleidoscope of solutions, ranging from the largest straw complex in Europe to the first hemp concrete house in the Netherlands. What is also striking: Plantyourflaggers like to keep things manageable. They opt for ‘light infrastructure’, sustainable water and energy solutions that you can apply on your own or with your neighbours without any strings attached.

“Almost every week we see buses with architecture students and visitors on bicycles. Because nowhere in this region you can see so many different architectural styles in a nutshell.”

resident Robert Bakker, De Gelderlander (2020)

Plantyourflaggers see the concept of sustainability as being broader than energy transition. The neighbourhood is characterised by new care concepts introduced by residents themselves. Moreover, it is the first suburban VINEX neighbourhood with a mixed use zoning, which means that you can start a business centre, boutique hotel, yoga centre, childcare facility, restaurant and neighbourhood shop here. And the management of the public space? They take care of that too.
